2021 CONFERENCE

In 2021 the conference was hosted outside its home venue by the International Justice and Human Rights Unit, Edge Hill University, bringing together colleagues from the University of Ljubljana, the European Centre for the Responsibility to Protect (ECR2P), and the British International Studies Association’s Working Group on Intervention and the Responsibility to Protect for a special 20-year anniversary event.

IN MEMORY OF PROF EDWARD LUCK,
United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Adviser on the Responsibility to Protect between 2008 and 2012 
Edward Luck was one of the driving forces behind making the Responsibility to Protect a reality. During his time as the first United Nations Secretary-General's first Special Adviser on the Responsibility to Protect, Edward was key in developing the 'three pillars' of R2P on how the international community could implement their responsibilities on preventing and responding to mass atrocity situations.
As a scholar, Edward was one of the leading voices in continuing to develop and discuss R2P in his writing and publications, as well as the role of the United Nations Security Council. Throughout his successful career, he held positions in several universities and institutes, including as Professor of Professional Practice in International and Public Affairs at Columbia University, the Joan B Kroc School of Peace Studies at the University of San Diego, the International Peace Institute, and the President and CEO of the United Nations Association of the USA. Edward also consulted and advised for numerous foreign ministries and international organisations or NGOs. The Organising Committee would like to thank Dana Luck, Edward's wife, for giving us her blessing to tribute this conference to him, and his important legacy on the Responsibility to Protect.
